Narrabeen Bait and Tackle
Fishing Report – 4 April 2025
Beaches
After the big swells there should be some nice deep gutters on most of the open beaches. These will all fish well for whiting, bream, tailor and salmon.
Prior to the big seas this week, Whiting were being caught at Collaroy, Dee Why and North Narrabeen all taken on beach worms. There were also reports of salmon in good numbers off Palm Beach.
There were also some nice jewfish taken at Curl Curl with green eyed squid being the best bait. Those fishing for jewfish have reported plenty of bronze whaler sharks as well.
With Narrabeen Lake being opened yesterday, fishing at the mouth with live mullet, yakkas or large slab baits can produce some big jewfish who are feeding on fish exiting the lake.
We have a good stock of quality preserved king worms. These fish very well on the beaches and catch everything from Whiting, Bream, Flathead, Jewfish, and Salmon.
Narrabeen Lake
The lake is now open again and should improve the fishing as fish come in and out of the system. There are large numbers of mullet in the lake at the moment which are attracting larger predators like jewfish and sharks.
Flathead around 60cm in length are in good numbers around the road bridge and Jamieson Park areas. One of our regular junior anglers caught a 72cm flathead at Wimbledon Ave during the week using Hawkesbury prawn for bait.
There are a few nice bream being caught as well in that area. The flathead are best targeted with a half-pilchard bait whereas the bream love the Hawkesbury prawns or soft plastics like the CrushCity Creeper.
A few reports of jewfish in the lake earlier this week sown near the Ocean St bridge with green eyed squid being the bait of choice.
Offshore
Not many reports due to the weather and sea conditions. Those that did brave the elements were rewarded with some small to medium snapper. One regular angler scored a nice 130cm cobia.
There are plenty of bonito schools offshore with Watsons leaping bonito making another appearance. Cast small 10-20g metals into the schools on light gear and enjoy the sound of screaming drags.
Flathead were on the drift at Mona Vale and Palm Beach in the 40-50m mark. Pilchards and fresh mullet fillets are the recommended baits.
Rocks
The big seas saw the rocks off limits for most of this week. NBT Staffer Chris got out on Thursday and managed a feed of nice pan sized snapper. He also dropped a few larger fish.
The rocks usually fish well after the big seas with fish moving in close to searching for a feed. Best baits are fresh squid, pilchards and large peeled Hawkesbury prawns.
There are also a few drummer starting to show up in the washes.
Pittwater
There is some good surface action in Pittwater this week with schools of Watson’s Leaping Bonito making their way into Pittwater. They should hang around for a few weeks. Small metal lures and small minnow lures will get you amongst these speedsters.
Look for the bust ups and birds. If not evident, try trolling small minnows around Coasters Retreat and the Morning Bay area.
Bonito have also been schooling up in the channel at Newport and have been regularly caught off the wharf there.
Browns Bay and McCarrs creek have produced some excellent quality bream using lightly weighted peeled prawns. Some of the bream we saw were in the 42-45cm bracket.
Kingfish are around the barges at the western side of Scotland Island. Try fresh squid or live baits for best results.
