Fishing Report – 6 December 2024

Hawkesbury Prawns are back

Following 2-3 months of not being able to source Hawkesbury prawns, we are pleased to let you know that we are starting to see reasonable quantities of good quality school prawns hitting the floors at the Sydney Fish Markets. These are an excellent all-round bait and you won’t buy fresher than our current stock.

Beaches

We have had mixed reports from the beaches this week. It was starting to fire up but a recent cold current has seen a cease fire and not a lot being caught. When this cold current moves on, we should see some catches of decent sized bream and whiting. Try Collaroy, North Narrabeen or Dee Why beaches – they are all holding good fish now. Try the early morning high tides next week using beach worms or peeled Hawkesbury prawns.

Improve your chances of catching some jewfish and whiting with our own quality, hand tied whiting and jewfish rigs. These are strong, proven rigs as used by our staff.

NBT staff member Steve recently caught nine keeper whiting on one packet of our beach worms proving how effective they are and how well they stay on the hook.

Rocks

Again the cold currents have quietened things down off the rocks but as the warmer water returns we should see ledges like Turimetta and Narrabeen Rock pool areas starting to produce tailor, big bream and Salmon  Cut baits such as Slimies and yellowtail will account for most fish as will Halco or Samaki metal lures. Some good snapper were coming off the rocks and should return again. Try fresh squid baits at South Curl Curl or Freshwater.

Narrabeen Lake

Some good sized flathead are being caught at Jamieson Park reserve and Berry reserve. Try fresh Hawkesbury prawns or CrushCity plastics for best results. Some big whiting were being caught at the Ocean St end of the lake with king beach worms getting best results. The morning tides next week are an ideal time to target the whiting in the lake.

Offshore

Dolphin fish are on the FADs – not in big number and not big fish but worth the trip out to have some fun.

Big kings have shown up on the outer reefs – try Broken Bay wide, Esmarelda, or the 12-mile reefs. Green eyed squid are the best bait.

There are still good snapper being caught in close at Long Reef and also Dee Why Wreck. Try tuna fillets or squid for best results.

Pittwater and Sydney Harbour

Pittwater has seen some great catches of squid over the past two weeks. These make great baits and are also an excellent table fish so it is always a dilemma whether to use them for bait or to eat them. When they are in good numbers as they are now, you get to do both.

Young NBT angler Simon got busted up by a metre plus jewfish at Church Point on Wednesday using some freshly caught squid. After an epic battle, Simon’s light leader gave way with the fish in sight. Better luck next time Simon !

As the water warms the surface action should improve with good mixed schools of fish entering Pittwater. Look for the birds and approach quietly upwind for best results. Flathead are in good numbers on the drift between Long Nose Point and Towlers Bay on the last part of the run out tide.

Large Kingfish are still schooling early morning in the western bays of Pittwater. Fresh squid is the best bait to target the kings.

The large kings are in good numbers in Sydney Harbour as well as lots of surface action comprising big slimies, bonito, salmon and tailor. Small Halco metals are the go-to target these.
